Agaricus Blezei Mushroom
It is a species of mushroom (a fungus) edible of great medicinal interest, also known as agaricus, mushroom, mushroom-of-life or mushroom-mushroom. Its phytotherapeutic properties have long been known in traditional medicine, especially its effect on the protection and enhancement of the immune system.
It is also used in cooking for its sweet taste, aroma of almonds and soft texture.
As regards its nutritional properties, the high content of beta-glucans, a type of polysaccharide that is thought to be the active ingredient responsible for its stimulating effect of the immune system, stands out.
It also has anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties.
In addition, agaricus is also indicated as a potential adjunct in the prevention and treatment of cancerous diseases (antitumor effect), including effects in reducing the side effects of radiotherapy and chemotherapy.
From studies already performed it is thought that this effect on cancer cells is due to the presence of specific polysaccharides, although not known, to one or more particular compounds.
Prevention and control of diabetes appears to be another of its effects on the human body, since it is associated with reduced blood glucose (glucose) after meals and improved insulin function.
Traditionally, it is also used as a cardiovascular protector, mainly for its antioxidant power, acting to maintain the integrity of blood vessels and the reduction of LDL or “bad cholesterol” cholesterol.
