Project Description

Alga Kelp

Kelp is a form of seaweed found in shallow ocean waters and forms thick colonies that could almost be described as

 kelp algae

an “underwater forest.” Kelp is a natural super food, its frond-shaped leaves make it an abundant source of vitamins and minerals like iodine, potassium, magnesium, calcium and iron and amino acids.

One of the benefits claimed for kelp is that its abundance of vitamins and minerals can promote healthy hair and skin.
However, kelp is mostly taken for its naturally high iodine content, which helps the functioning of the thyroid gland. Iodine is essential for the formation of thyroid hormones, which regulate the body’s energy production, promote growth and development, and help burn excess fat. Natural food sources of iodine include seafood, bread, dairy foods and salt, and kelp supplements may help anyone who avoids these foods in their daily diet.

Kelp Benefits
• Excellent source of vitamins and minerals:

• Kelp contains 46 minerals, 16 amino acids (the building blocks of protein) and 11 different vitamins. Prominent among the minerals are iodine, salt, iron, potassium, phosphorus and calcium. The lead vitamins in kelp are vitamin A and niacin.

In addition, kelp benefits include the following properties: anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, anti-tumor, anti-biotic, anti-viral, and immune-stimulating.

The BBC released a report in April 2011 suggesting that iodine deficiency could be becoming endemic in the UK. A study involving more than 700 teenage girls at nine UK centres found more than two-thirds had a deficiency, highlighting the importance of food/supplements which contain kelp.

Research has shown that brown alga reduces blood glucose levels, so it can be beneficial for people with diabetes.  It can also promote digestive and cardiovascular health and help manage weight, since it is similar to dietary fiber by keeping your body feeling full.  It even has anti-inflammatory properties to help reduce swelling and ease pain.  Isn’t it amazing that our oceans contains these healing plants!!

Kelp is available in many different forms and can be consumed in any way for health and beauty benefits.
